Apple Picking State Of Mind

Apple pick in the pastoral settings of Upstate New York at Masker Orchards.

AB: Tis the season to…Apple Pick! And boy does it get crowded up state. I thought I was in some gentrified neighborhood in Brooklyn! But a Rockland County we will go and make sure to come prepared. You’ll be hoofing up hills and through orchard lanes littered with apples fell from the vine. Sensible shoes will do a sartorial man, good. Once you get your apples for the season, my apple of choice was the Ida apple, a sour apple with sufficient tart  sweetness and crisp bite, know that fiber does a winter wardrobe good.

Ida, a lovely name for a lovely apple.

Andrew on the farm: Take a breath from hoofing it up the mountain and through the lanes. What I'm wearing: Paul Smith Cardigan, John Varvatos T-shirt, Theory pants, Uniqlo socks, Birkenstocks, Vintage fringed scarf.

Veggie & Piggy Roast

Roasted Onions & Peppers with apple cider vinaigrette a l'Espagnole

AB: I’m voting with my pocket book and gas prices are just so high. It may not be economically solvent after all and all too early in the season in these tumultuous times to turn on the heat so I warm up my house by turning on the oven and roasting some veggies. Baked sweet potato fries are a sweet and creamy treat that brings autumn to the forefront. Season well with salt and pepper and a light glaze of olive oil, throw it in the oven at 400 degrees for twenty minutes and then broil for another ten minutes to crispy up the edges and skins. Yum! Another sweet roasted confection to add to the repertoire is roasting peppers and onions tossed in vinaigrettes. Make a little potion consisting of apple cider or sherry vinaigre with some olive oil, and liberally cut up some onions and peppers in large roastable pieces and toss in the vinaigrette. Roast in the oven at 400 degrees for 20-30 minutes, depending on how soft you like your veggies. You can add them to some greens and blue cheese for an over the top Spanish inspired salad. What you get is sweet and caramelized with a tinge of mellow sour and luscious notes from the oil and vinaigre. Warm up the fall by roasting some veggies or wearing some fur.
